Day 22: Swale Way Sprints on a Saturday

After yesterday’s much-needed rest day, it was back to the grind today! But before I could lace up my running shoes, Polly had her usual football practice this morning, followed by Emilia’s Kent Schools Cross Country race. I’m so proud of her; she did amazingly well and even managed a sprint finish! Watching her determination was a great reminder that sometimes the hardest part is simply putting one foot in front of the other—preferably at speed.

The Route: Familiar Footing

With the kids’ activities sorted, it was finally time for my run. I headed out along Swale Way, a route I know quite well, towards the Kemsley Paper Mill. It’s not the most scenic path—unless, of course, you have a particular fondness for industrial architecture—but it’s flat, straight, and perfect for today’s workout. Running here always brings a mix of nostalgia and focus; it’s a stretch of road where I’ve endured the start of many tough slogs, each memory woven into the rhythm of my strides.

The Workout: Short and Sweet

Today’s plan called for sprint training: 7 x 10-second sprints with 3 minutes of recovery in between. Sprinting in marathon training might sound like bringing a sword to a pillow fight, but it’s all about improving running form and efficiency. If you can learn to run like a gazelle when it matters most, you’ll feel less like a lumbering hippo during those later miles.

Even though the sprints were short, they definitely got the heart pumping! It’s amazing how much effort you can pack into 10 seconds when you’re trying to outpace your own shadow. By the end of the session, my legs were reminding me that gravity is not, in fact, optional. On the plus side, the structured intervals gave me a renewed sense of purpose—each sprint was like ticking off another small victory.

The Reward: Feet Up and Football

With the run done, it’s time to switch gears and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. Tonight’s plan? The NFL playoffs and a couple of Budweisers. There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing you’ve earned your downtime. A quick post-run stretch and a warm shower sealed the deal for the evening. Cheers to a productive day and to whatever lies ahead in this marathon journey. If today’s sprints were a taste of what’s to come, I’d better belt up for the full-course meal!
