Day 45: A Much-Needed Rest Day After a Weekend of Endurance

Image
Today marks Day 45 of my London Marathon 2025 training plan—a day dedicated not to clocking miles, but to embracing the art of pause. After yesterday’s long run, an evening that whisked me from a round of bingo to the excitement of the Super Bowl, it was clear that my body was calling for a break. Rest days, as it turns out, are less about lounging aimlessly and more about the delicate act of keeping on, all while dodging the occasional stumble. The Aftermath of a Late Night Last night, despite managing a respectable couple of hours of sleep around 8 pm in anticipation of the big game, the reality of a late NFL night quickly set in. My body, it seems, has an uncanny way of keeping score—a ledger of sleep debt that demands immediate repayment. The thrill of football was undeniable, yet the resulting disruption in my sleep pattern left a noticeable mark on my mood and energy. It’s as if my internal clock decided that even the most riveting game couldn’t outshine the necessity for proper ...

Day 44 – The First True Long Run and a Bingo Bonanza

A Promising Yet Perilous Start Today marked a significant turning point in my London Marathon 2025 training. Unlike the measured pace of previous runs, this morning presented my first genuine long run—a solitary test of endurance that challenged both body and mind. The weather was determined to be as dour as the forecast promised, with a persistent drizzle that lent the day a certain grim ambience. Even the early morning light seemed hesitant, as though nature itself was uncertain whether to encourage my efforts or merely watch in bemusement. A Gruelling Solo Effort I embarked on my journey at 8:30 am, following my regular route along the A2 towards Teynham and then Faversham. What was intended to be a steady two-hour run quickly transformed into an arduous battle against both physical fatigue and an almost conspiratorial weather. The remnants of yesterday’s indulgence in meat left me feeling unusually heavy—each step felt as if I were wading through a particularly stubborn kind of tre...

So, Day 35 of the London Marathon 2025 training plan was a rest day, and it certainly had its moments! It wasn’t exactly the relaxing, feet-up kind of day I might have hoped for, but it was, at the very least, a day. A Hospital Adventure (or: The Art of Waiting) The morning kicked off with a trip to the hospital for Emilia’s orthodontist appointment. If you’ve ever had the joy of waiting in a hospital, you’ll know that time moves at a speed entirely unrelated to the rest of the universe—less a ticking clock and more a slowly leaking hourglass. Three hours in the waiting room, punctuated by some brisk corridor navigation for dental x-rays, felt like an endurance event in itself. There’s something uniquely draining about the quiet, oppressive hum of a hospital waiting area, where time stretches so thin you could iron it. Eventually, we made our escape, dashing back to Sittingbourne to return Emilia to school before I promptly turned around and headed straight back to Rochester for work. ...
